Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine is the oldest known form of medicine and is defined
as the study and use of plant material as food and medicine for healing
and health promotion. Herbal medicine has a tradition, where it has
been significantly influenced and validated by the development of
scientific technology and medical research. In the past 150 years the
biologically active compounds found in plants have been utilized to
synthesize many pharmaceutical drugs, however these active compounds
can function effectively when taken as teas, tablets, essential oils,
ointments or extracts.
Herbal medicines act on the human
physiology to influence bodily activity, enhance or inhibit organ
function, and are prescribed with the aim of correcting imbalances and
resolving patterns of dysfunction. For example, bitter substances found
in herbs such as dandelion, burdock and gentian stimulate the
production and release of digestive juices, thereby improving digestive
function. Herbalists generally use whole plant extracts containing
multiple constituents on the basis that these ingredients collectively
achieve synergistic activity and enhanced efficacy.
Nutritional Medicine
Nutritional Medicine can be simply defined as the relationship of food to the well-being of the human body. It also encompasses the study of environmental effects on the quality of foods, and the impact of nutritional factors on health and disease. Nutritional medicine uses food and individual nutrients in doses only achievable in supplement form, for medicinal and therapeutic effects.
Nutrients are involved in the creation of every molecule and the maintenance of every system in the body. The body requires more than 45 nutrients to maintain health. Many vitamins and minerals act as coenzymes in promoting essential chemical reactions. They help regulate metabolism, assist in the formation and maintenance of bones and tissues, hormones, nervous system chemicals, and genetic material. Subtle nutrient deficiencies can occur before the onset of classical deficiency. Such marginal deficiencies may ultimately contribute to the development of degenerative diseases. Nutritional medicine aims to optimise nutrition according to individual biochemical, environmental and health states.
Diagnostic Testing
Often healthcare is focused on treating symptoms rather than investigating underlying causes. Health Fusion offers a range of laboratory diagnostic tests through MedLab and Metametrix; a local and United States laboratory to analyse the unique biochemical function of your body. Laboratory tests may identify the nutritional imbalances and toxicities underlying chronic diseases. Health Fusion may use these testing services to custom tailor nutritional therapies, detoxification programs and other lifestyle changes that can result in a significant and positive impact on your health outcome.
